Poets on a Cold Tin Roof
On April 24, Owen Sound Poet Laureate Terry Burns will host her very first poetry salon, in the Gallery at the Roxy Theatre. Part of the mandate of the Poet Laureate is to help raise the profile of poetry in the community. Poets on a Cold Tin Roof is intended to do just that. Like the famous literary salons of old, it will give the public an opportunity to enjoy and learn about poetry in a casual atmosphere. It’s also intended to help demystify poetry. “We’re going to have a lot of fun,” said Terry Burns. “We’ll have a lot of laughs, some great poetry, and I think a few surprises, too!” As a special treat, people attending this free event will be able to savor an aptly-named ice cream confection along with the poetry – tin roof sundaes.
Poets on a Cold Tin Roof will feature a reading by special guest Marty Gervais, Poet Laureate of Windsor. There will also be a performance by the Sounds improv group and readings by Terry Burns and Richard-Yves Sitoski who is showcased in the latest issue of Tin Roof Press, co-sponsor of this event.
“I think it’s wonderful that Tin Roof Press is partnering with us and I hope we continue to develop community partnerships as the Poet Laureate program goes along,” said Burns. “Pooling resources is a great way to manage events which might be too much for one organization to take on alone.”
Burns is especially excited about welcoming Marty Gervais to Owen Sound. He is an award-winning journalist and editor, and the publisher of Black Moss Press He is also a novelist, playwright and poet. “His list of writing credentials is truly impressive,” said Burns. “He’s such an accomplished poet and advocate for poetry, and of course I’m going to be picking his brains as to what they do with their Poet Laureate program down in Windsor. I’m sure we won’t run out of things to talk about.”
Poets on a Cold Tin Roof will take place in the Gallery at the Roxy Theatre on April 24 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.
