John.B.Lee (约翰.

Being Human

By John.B.Lee

I am reading Rumi
reading Tu Fu
and thinking of being human

last summer
Marty and I
slept in the farmhouse loft
under French heaven near Vitteaux
and we lay in our separate cots
like boys at camp
laughing, talking silly
making fun of everyone
we were mostly ourselves, middle aged men
with the window open
to starlight
and the evening breath of the fields

look up at the slant of ceiling
the slant of beams
this room was built
for dreaming
and we were giddy as lads
with happy lives, not
old Tu Fu, his sadness settled
like shadows, like rivers
like cold stones of winter
and the bitter darkness of long nights
and the lonesome insomnia
of small hours
like the mystical beauty of death and dying
and the inescapable anger of the soul

our hearts refusing the silence
with a lovely slowing exhalation
as we each become
more pensive in
the loosening limbs of slumber
relaxing our hands like unfurled leaves
and pressing our faces to linen
meanwhile great rivers of the earth
the Tigris and Euphrates
the Yangtze
the Amazon of my father’s last days
flow on
and what would I buy
from the famous floating markets of Bangkok

I would purchase the rains of remember
I would purchase the stars of recall
and what to preserve in a poem
but the drenching of darkness with light. .

Marty

失眠孤寂;

Translated from the Spanish

Come, my love, come, this lonely, passionate
Nova Scotian night. Your voice trembles like wings.
Your bones whisper. Under the moon, I stroll
The shadowed road, awaiting your dark eyes
And sandaled feet. My love, if I have to,
I will pace this blue town of white shadows
And black water all night, if I have to.

Vanishing Cream
In memory of Amy Winehouse
By Bruce Meyer

At Wevill’s house one desert night
as I lay reading at the window screen,
a moth flew into my lit candle
and fell burning like a torch song.

By the time I snuffed the flame.
wondering if any art was worth
a life—even a dumb insect’s—
only the wings’ eyes remained.

I watched other moths, less talented,
dance and beat themselves helpless
against the metal mesh, their flutters
the sound of an old film projector

running silent movies, unaccompanied,
the movements of faces overplayed,
each pancaked to reflect a light
shine through them to the future.

My grandmother would remove her face
each night before she went to sleep
with a cream that made her ghostly,
letting the day vanish as if a miracle—

the same way I thought nature sang
when I woke at dawn to uneasy steps,
my face still pressed against the screen
and a doe’s eyes staring back at me.

this poem is from Bruce Meyer’s A Book of Bread (2011) from Exile
